Yann Merker - Biography
Yann Merker began studying the cello through the Suzuki Method with Ann Grabe at the age of 4. At 10 years old, he performed duo concerts with pianist Anne-Lise Dodelier in the Côte St-André and in the Royaume de la Musique in Paris. He also began chamber music and orchestral playing at this time. Later, he studied at the Conservatoire National de Région de Lyon with Patrick Gabard (cello) and Nathalie Geoffray (chamber music).
He received the Médaille d'Or unanimously and with top honours from the CNR de Lyon. Shortly after, he went to Berlin and studied at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" with Prof. Stephan Forck (cello) and Prof. Eberhard Feltz (string quartet). He participated in masterclasses led by Kristin von der Goltz, Troels Svane, Kolja Blacher, Tabea Zimmermann, Wolfgang Böttcher.
Yann Merker has performed with several orchestras like the DSO (Deutsches Symphonisches Orchester Berlin), the Brandenburger Symphoniker, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin with soloists Gautier Capuçon, Julia Fischer, Kolja Blacher, Guy Braunstein under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle, Seiji Ozawa, Kent Nagano and Daniel Barenboim. He has given recitals with pianists Anne-Lise Dodelier, Karla Haltenwanger and Gayane Saakyan with whom he recorded a live Recital for "Deutschland Kultur Radio".
